Cleanings and exams
The cleaning and exam are the routine visit for adults and children over six: your teeth are cleaned and the dentist checks your teeth and gums.
The dentist decides how often you should come back and whether you need X-rays. It isn't the same for everyone.

What happens at the visit
The visit takes about an hour. If the dentist finds something to treat, she tells you how many more visits it takes; usually one to three.

Good to know
Comfort
If anything bothers you, raise your hand and we stop. If an area is sensitive, we tell you what we can use to numb it.
Alternatives, and what if you wait
You can ask for the exam only and leave the cleaning for another visit. If you wait a long time, tartar irritates the gums and each cleaning gets harder.
Risks and after-care
After a cleaning your gums can be tender for a day or two. Brush gently. If bleeding doesn't stop, call us.
How it's billed
It's billed per visit. Before we start, you get the fee in writing.

Questions about this service
How often should I come?
The dentist decides based on your teeth and gums. For some people it's every six months; for others, more or less often.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
No. We take them only when the dentist needs them to see something you can't see by eye.
What is a deep cleaning?
It's a cleaning below the gum line, one area at a time, when there's tartar there. The dentist explains it first and gives you the fee in writing.
